A glimpse of what’s happening around baseball today:

The Rays put shortstop Wander Franco on the 10-day disabled list with a pulled right quadriceps, the latest setback for the injury-plagued team.

Franco aggravated the injury while running for base in the ninth inning of Monday’s 9-5 loss to the Texas Rangers. He was replaced by a pinched runner after making a tight turn around first base on a single before stopping and cautiously returning to the sack.

The right quad has been bothering Franco, 21, for a few weeks, and he’s now been sidelined with second baseman Brandon Lowe. Lowe has been out since May 16 with tightness in his lower back.

“It’s pretty obvious he’s been playing a lot lately,” Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said of Franco. “It probably makes more sense to see if we can calm this down, get some treatment, get his legs under him and he’ll be fine.”

Franco, who is hitting .270, had his first three-hitter since May 9 in the series opener against the Rangers. In the 16 games between the pair, he hit just .107 between those games and hasn’t homered since hitting his fourth on April 26.

In a Yankees rotation with the All-Stars, left-hander Nestor Cortes (4-1, 1.70 ERA) has stood out this season.

Cortes, 27, allowed three or fewer earned runs in his nine starts this year before this outing against the Los Angeles Angels and Reid Detmers (2-2, 4.65) at Yankee Stadium.

Cortes held opponents to a .175 batting average, the lowest in the major leagues among qualified pitchers entering Tuesday.

Cortes will look to match his career high for wins, set when he went 5-1 as a rookie reliever for New York in 2019.

The Angels have lost six in a row.

The Mets opted for first baseman/outfielder Dominic Smith at Triple-A Syracuse amid a slow start to the season for the 26-year-old.

Most things have gone well this year for the NL East Mets, who have won five in a row, but Smith has been a disappointment. Slugger Pete Alonso is set up at first base for New York and it was thought Smith could help solidify the designated hitter spot.

Smith hit .316 in a breakout season in 2020, but the former first-round pick struggled to replicate that success. He is hitting .186 this season without a home run in 101 plate appearances and with a .543 OPS. Smith played six seasons at the majors and hasn’t played regularly at Triple-A since 2018.
