USA vs Kazakhstan preview

The United States rebounded from a first 2-1 loss to Finland with a 5-1 failure by North American rival Canada. Trevor Moore scored two goals in the second period to help lead the way for the United States in the victory.

“It’s a huge win,” Moore said. “Whenever you play a game between the United States and Canada, you want to be on the safe side, especially for an American player.”

The Americans took the win despite injury to starting goalie Anthony Stolarz. Jake Oettinger made 26 saves to secure the win, a goal in the third period being the only flaw of his night.

“As a backup keeper you never know when you’re going to take your chance,” Oettinger said. “I felt bad for Anthony, and I hope he’s okay, but once I was there I just had to prepare myself and do whatever I could to get into the game.

Kazakhstan was the surprise of the tournament in many ways, knocking out defending champions Finland 2-1 in a shootout.

“Both games were hard-fought games and our goalkeeper [Nikita Boyarkin] Obviously played amazing today, ”said Curtis Valk of Kazakhstan after the victory. “We’re going to need this in the future, but we stuck to the game plan, and it got us successful tonight.”

The world championships are unpredictable due to the lack of talent in the NHL, and many of the best players still play in the playoffs. Kazakhstan’s result against Finland is one of the best.

“We’ve been talking about coming together as a brotherhood and being tough to face and our guys have been rewarded for that here tonight,” said USA head coach Jack Capuano. “Offensively I liked the way our guys paid attention to detail and now it’s a matter of continuing as we move forward here.”

The United States is a big favorite for the game, with -600 to win, with a margin set at 2.5 goals.
