Everyone now knows that Netflix is an absolute beast when it comes to the volume of entertainment it produces month-to-month, keeping its tens of millions of subscribers busy enjoying tons of new TV content and cinematographic. To use the month of May as an example, this new content offering includes everything related to Netflix original series like Jupiter’s legacy, the new original Korean drama from Netflix Go to paradise and Love, Death and Robots: Volume 2 to Netflix original movies like Army of the dead, with Dave Bautista, and The woman at the window – the latter is currently among the best streaming movies on all major streaming platforms.
This distinction goes through the Reelgood streaming search engine service, which places the Amy Adams-directed film at the top of its ranking of the most watched streaming movies of the week of May 12-18. But before you watch the movie, there are probably a few things that you should probably be aware of first, beyond just the fact that it is quite a popular streaming title at the moment.

First up, here’s some basic information about the movie, courtesy of Netflix. It is adapted from the best-selling 2018 novel of the same name from AJ Finn, and stars Adams as Anna Fox – “an agoraphobic child psychologist who finds herself watching the perfect family across the street through the windows of her Brown Stone in New York City. York. Her life is turned upside down when she inadvertently witnesses a brutal crime … shocking secrets are revealed and nothing and no one is what they seem in this psychological thriller starring Amy Adams, Gary Oldman , Anthony Mackie, Fred Hechinger, Wyatt Russell, Brian Tyree Henry, Tracy Letts, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Julianne Moore. “

Critics and critics, along with many early viewers, seem to have had the same reaction to the film so far – they hate it.
Open the List of rotten tomatoes for The woman at the window, for example, and you’ll be greeted with insanely poor viewership and review percentages (39% and 27%, respectively). The critical consensus, per Rotten Tomatoes, is: “A milquetoast and confused thriller that drowns in its furious tributes, The woman at the window will see the public close their curtains.“
Yikes. Likewise, from the British newspaper The independent, who gathered a number of comments about the film on social media:
“The woman at the window is so bad … just watch Rear window by Alfred Hitchcock instead! one person wrote.
Another said: “Why watch The woman at the window (2021) when you can watch Rear window (1954)? “
A frustrated viewer called it “yet ANOTHER REAR WINDOW remake”, adding: “Rear window didn’t need another remake. And they weren’t even subtle about it. There was literally a stroke of Rear window play on television. “
To me, this shows just how much of a cultural juggernaut Netflix has become, even when it produces things that are not universally welcomed – in fact, things that are largely planned. And, of course, to that end, remember that beauty (or the lack of it) is always in the eye of the beholder. A writer for City Country, for example, argues that all reviews of The woman at the window actually missing the point.
Here’s the full list of this week’s most viewed movies across all major streaming services, again, by Reelgood:
- The woman at the window
- Those who wish me death
- Mortal combat
- Wonder Woman 1984
- Shadow in the cloud
- Tom Clancy’s Without remorse
- The Mitchells against the machines
