One Piece: Who’s Who in the Netflix Show

The World of One Piece is coming to Netflix as a live-action adaptation of the much-loved manga. We recently got our first look at some of the series’ extended cast, as well as concept art and set design. From Monkey D. Luffy to Red Hair to Alvida and beyond, the show’s cast looks massive.

So whether you’re a confirmed fan or new to One Piece, here’s everything you need to know about the cast and characters of the Netflix series.

The cast of Netflix’s One Piece

Inaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, showing a wide variety of enthusiasm and energy in the behind-the-scenes footage that Netflix released. For those new to the series, Luffy’s journey begins after he was accidentally turned into a rubber man by eating a magical Devil Fruit, giving him the power to stretch his body but cursing him for not being able to swim (a situation that we all found in, I’m sure). He is a powerful fighter with an insatiable appetite for meat and a dream of one day becoming the Pirate King.

Luffy’s friend and mentor, Red-Haired Shanks, is played by Peter Gadiot of Showtime’s Yellowjackets. We were treated to a brief glimpse of his ship, the Red Force, during behind-the-scenes footage. Shanks is a legendary pirate captain, but known as Red Hair to his friends.

Ilia Isorelys Paulino plays Luffy’s first true antagonist, Pirate Captain Alvida. In the original manga, she undergoes a massive visual transformation as the crew reaches Loguetown, the last port before the true adventure on the ocean route known as the Grand Line begins. It will be interesting to see if future episodes will recast the role or if any changes will be made to deviate from the source material. (And we’re only speculating, but it’s possible the team’s visit to Loguetown will be skipped entirely because the casting of Smoker’s character, who makes his first appearance there, has yet to be announced.)

Alvida’s ship, the Miss Love Duck, can be seen in detail in behind-the-scenes footage and is likely the setting for at least one early episode. In the manga and anime, Luffy first meets his friend Koby on the Love Duck. Koby is played in this series by Morgan Davies. The character doesn’t stay in the manga for long, but plays a much larger role in the series later on. Hopefully the show will run for a few seasons so we can finally see where Koby’s story is heading.

The first real member of Luffy’s crew that we meet is the legendary three-sword pirate hunter Roronoa Zoro, played by Japanese actor Mackenyu. The actor has previously portrayed characters from other shonen hits like JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Tokyo Ghoul, and Rurouni Kenshin, among many others.

Roronoa Zoro will face off against Aidan Scott, who plays the bratty, spoiled Helmeppo, another character with a small role at first but whose influence will grow in the future. Helmeppo’s father, Captain Axe-Hand Morgan, is portrayed by Langley Kirkwood in his second on-screen comedic role after playing Judge Lex in 2012’s Dredd.
