Jason Statham in Wrath of Man beats Spiral on VOD

“Spiral” did better at the box office, but this franchise couldn’t knock “Wrath of Man” off the top spot on the VOD charts.

During a week of mostly static VOD rankings, something peculiar happened: “Spiral: From the Book of Saw”, the only major new premium VOD release, failed to dislodge “Wrath of Man “from its first overall position.

Both are genre thrillers, each released for $ 19.99 after their third weekend in theaters. “Spiral” is the newest, has 40% higher theatrical sales ($ 21.8 million to $ 15.6 million), and is part of a long-standing, lucrative franchise. However, it was “Wrath” that was # 1 in three of the four listings below (# 2 at Apple / iTunes), while “Spiral” was in second place in the two charts following revenue and lower (# 4 and # 6) at Apple / iTunes and Google TV, both ranked by number of rentals.

Why? “Wrath” had a much better movie score (A-, excellent for routine crime drama), while the B- for “Spiral” was at the bottom of the scale for the franchise. “Wrath” has a proven action star in Statham at a time when a famous star can create impulse buys. “Wrath” doesn’t claim to be original, but its continued dominance suggests that films that aren’t part of series or sequels can gain a foothold.

“The Courier”, a Cold War spy thriller in The Square vein starring Benedict Cumberbatch, is available now for $ 5.99. It is # 1 at Apple / iTunes and # 10 at FandangoNow and Vudu, despite its lower price. After a successful PVOD run, “Tom & Jerry” also lowered its price and placed in the bottom half of all four charts. Some of the few new entries include “Edge of the World” with Jonathan Rhys Myers and Dominic Monaghan. Available at $ 6.99, took seventh place at Apple / iTunes.

Netflix, after several weeks of leading originals, saw the theatrical release of Freestyle “2 Hearts”, theatrically released at the start of the reopening phase last October (with gross revenue of $ 1.3 ) take the first place. Faith-based romance based on a true story stars Radha Mitchell.

Netflix‘s Spanish original “Xtreme” is also opening strong. It sounds pretty familiar – an average guy is looking for revenge after the murder of his father and son – and it’s at number 4.
