The third season of the popular anime series harley quinn premiered on July 28, and its trailers have shown that it will feature several new characters from across the DC Universe.
One of them is Dick Grayson, the original Robin, who becomes the hero Nightwing after having a blast on his own, and is voiced by Harvey Guillén. This won’t be the first time Nightwing has appeared in animated form. In fact, the character has quite a storied history of film and television appearances.
The New Batman Adventures (1997-1999)
Nightwing’s first animated appearance was fitting, as it fully showed Dick Grayson’s evolution from Robin to Nightwing. Dick was Batman’s Robin in Batman: The Animated Seriesbut when the rest of the show, The New Adventures of Batmancreated it was Tim Drake who took on the role.
Indeed, Dick had left the role of Robin and assumed the new identity of Nightwing. Nightwing’s appearances in the series show how Bruce and Dick grew apart and how Nightwing functions as a solo hero.
Teen Titans (2003 – 2006)
However Teen Titans never officially confirms which Robin is the extremely quotable Robin seen throughout the series, the Robin is generally believed to be, in fact, Dick Grayson.
One of the biggest clues to this is Nightwing’s appearance in the episode “How Long is Forever?” which sees Starfire sent twenty years into the future through a wormhole. Once there, she encounters future versions of her Teen Titans teammates, including Robin, who has now become the hero Nightwing.
The Batman (2004 – 2008)
Before Robert Pattinson live action movie The Batman, there was an anime series titled the exact same thing. The series made sweeping changes to the character designs and Batman mythos, one of them being Dick Grayson’s Robin joining Batman after Barbara Gordan, with Robin debuting in the fourth season.
The episode “Artifacts” spans multiple time periods, introducing Gotham to the year 3027 while returning to 2027, a time when Dick as Nightwing and Barbara as Oracle help Batman fight Mr. Freeze.
Batman: The Brave and the Bold (2008-2011)
Another series that fully showed Dick Grayson’s transition from Robin to Nightwing was Batman: The Brave and the Bold. In the episode “Sidekicks Assmble!” Robin, along with other famous superhero sidekicks Speedy and Aqualad, set off on a single-player mission that becomes more than they had prepared for.
A more comedic, family-friendly version of the Silver Age of Batman, Brave and the Bold ends the episode with Nightwing appearing in his iconic “Disco Suit” from the comics and being given the name “Nightwing” by Batman, just seconds after saying he was going to call his own shots.
Batman: Under Red Riding Hood (2010)
Considered by many to be one of the best animated Batman films, Batman: Under Red Riding Hood tells the story of the second Robin, the death of Jason Todd and his resurrection as the anti-hero Red Hood.
Red Hood clashes with his former mentor Batman throughout Batman: Under Red Riding Hood, and the family affair wouldn’t be complete without the first Robin, Dick Grayson, starring. Dick is shown now operating as Nightwing and aiding Bruce in his investigation to find out exactly who this new Red Hood is.
Young Justice (2010 -)
Dick Grayson appears as one of the main heroes of the animated series young justice, first in his Robin identity in season 1, then in his Nightwing identity starting in season 2 after the five-year time-skip. One of the most experienced members of the young superhero team, Nightwing served as the team’s leader for some time.
His many acts of bravery throughout the series have made Dick one of the show’s most popular characters, and the show’s portrayal of Nightwing is considered one of the best ever produced.
The Teen Titans Go! (2013-)
The Teen Titans Go! is the comedy spin-off of the original Teen Titans series, and is considered by some to be one of the worst television reboots of all time. One of the reasons is the complete modification of the character of Robin from the original series to Go! as he transforms from a cool, caring leader to an obnoxious jerk who is the butt of almost every joke on the show.
This fate also applies to Nightwing, as the Titans travel to the future and encounter a sad sandwich-stealing version of Nightwing who lives alone in a small apartment.
Son of Batman (2014)
Dick appears in numerous films across the DC Animated Film Universe, making his first appearance in son of batman. No longer Robin by the time the film is made, Dick is now Nightwing, and he meets Bruce’s newly discovered son, Damian, when the young boy is about to behead a criminal.
Dick and Damian fight, and although Dick is badly grazed by Damian’s sword, he is able to overpower him and leave him hanging from a lamp post until the boy’s father can pick them both up.
Batman Ninja (2018)
Nightwing was one of dozens of Batman characters to appear in the Caped Crusader animated film. ninja batman. In the film, the Bat-Family and its various Gotham villains are sent back in time to feudal Japan.
Nightwing aids in Batman’s fight against the Joker and other major villains, all of whom have become feudal lords by the time. It should be noted that this is the only Batman film in which almost all of the main Robins (Dick, Jason, Tim and Damian) appear, only Stephanie Brown is missing.
Batman and Harley Quinn (2018)
The new season of harley quinn isn’t the first time Nightwing and Harley have interacted in animated form. The two actually get quite intimate with each other in Batman and Harley Quinn.
Set in the same DC Animated Universe as featured Batman: The Animated Series and The New Adventures of Batman, the film features Nightwing battling with a parole-violating Harley, only to be knocked out. Waking up tied to a bed, Nightwing has sex with Harley.
